About this item

  • LOW MAINTENANCE: This culture is direct-set, meaning it only cultures once, perfect for beginners or anyone who doesn't want to have to maintain a starter.
  • COST EFFECTIVE: With this starter you can culture up to 4 gallons of non dairy yogurt, effectively spending less than half what you'd pay for store-bought ready-made vegan yogurts, including cost of milk you'll use!
  • VEGAN: Make your own plant based yogurt from your favorite non dairy milk! Soy milk is the only kind that will naturally thicken without pectin, but you can also make delicious yogurt drinks from almond milk, oat milk, or whatever you like.
  • HEALTH BENEFITS: Yogurt contains probiotics for digestive health, and vegan yogurt contains just as many probiotics as dairy based yogurts. It's also a great source of vegan protein!
  • SAFE: Each batch is pathogen tested by a trusted third-party laboratory so you know you are getting a high quality, healthy starter to make delicious yogurt at home.

Product Description

Ditch the dairy, prize the plant-based

bowl of vegan yogurt with honey, blackberries, and oats, with logo in corner

Avoiding lactose, or animal-based products in general, but still want the probiotic benefits and deliciousness yogurt has to offer? You've come to the right place! Our vegan yogurt starter culture lets you make your own non-dairy yogurt right at home.

DIY yogurt FTW

Why homemade yogurt?

Yogurt you make at home has more live active cultures than store-bought, and won't have any artificial preservatives—only ingredients you pick yourself! It's also much more cost-effective, as well as simply being a fun and fulfilling hobby.

What kind of plant-based milks can I use to make vegan yogurt?

Although your results will vary depending on which you choose, you can use this starter to culture just about any dairy-free milk you can imagine, including nut, seed, grain, and legume milk—and beyond. While store-bought milk may be used, we recommend using milk with as few additives as possible.

Dehydrated starter culture

All of our yogurt starters come in powdered form, compact and easy to store in the fridge or freezer until you're ready to activate it.

Do I need a yogurt maker for this starter?

While this is a thermophilic starter, meaning it cultures at 105-112°F, this can be accomplished using other appliances, such as a food dehydrator, folding proofer, crockpot, thermos, pilot light or oven light, or insulated cooler with heating pad.

Will my vegan yogurt be a similar consistency to dairy yogurt?

Soy milk is the only kind that will thicken naturally, but you can add pectin or gelatin to any non-dairy milk to help it along. You should also keep in mind that plant-based yogurt often doesn't set until chilled.

How much yogurt can I make with this starter?

It comes with 4 packets of starter, each of which can culture up to a half gallon of milk; you can also use 2 packets at a time to culture up to 4 gallons. Thus, you can culture a maximum of 8 gallons of milk total, resulting in ~4 gallons of yogurt.

Can I use store-bought non-dairy milk to make vegan yogurt?

In general, yes; however, additives and preservatives can interfere with the culturing process. We particularly don't recommend using commercial almond milk. The best way to ensure you have natural milk is to make your own—it's easier than you think.

Is it possible to make a dairy-free yogurt starter that's heirloom-style?

Short answer: No...but there's a loophole. If you can tolerate a bit of dairy, you can maintain a dairy mother culture (such as our Heirloom Yogurt Starter), re-culturing it weekly, and simply use some of that batch to culture your plant-based milk.

Pink Hue to Yogurt

Pink Hue to Yogurt
I've been using the vegan yogurt starter for years, with Edensoy plain, unsweetened soy milk, and have been very happy with it! I use it in place of sour cream, in salad dressings, in "buttermilk" pancakes, smoothies, and sauces, anywhere I would normally use sour cream or plain yogurt. I make it in my Instant Pot on the yogurt setting. With a little experimentation on quantity of milk, amount of starter, and incubation time, it comes out consistently good every time. Until now I've had great success, no problems at all. However, the last two batches I made ended up with a layer of pink yogurt on top, but white underneath. I looked into this, and apparently, pink means bacterial contamination, so I've ended up tossing out the last two batches. I always sterilize all my equipment, so I am stumped. I've contacted the company for help, and hopefully they will have some answers for me.
